I recently (essentially to refresh my memory on this saw sharpening lark, so I know whereof I speak) sharpened a cheap 13 TPI "Cockerill" (second line saw from Spear & Jackson) saw for a friend.

The profile was 13 degree rake, 15 degree fleam, and I used the 5" extra slim Vallorbe file. Without further ado:

If anyone has any tips on photographing saw teeth, I'm all ears, BTW.

My concerns about the gullet size appear justified - I certainly wouldn't want to file smaller teeth with gullets this big.

Hi BB,

I cut teeth in with a 6" slim [might be a 6" x-slim] as the corners hold up better and I can push harder without failure on the edges--goes faster.

The pic below is your teeth on top and mine below. This is one I cut in last night for a joinery saw into new steel. About 12 ppi, so the scale may be a tad off from yours, but not for trying. As it is being cut in, it is a rip profile.

As I ended up shooting it at a slight angle, the far edge of the gullet and shadow can be seen, which makes the gullet appear a little larger than it is, but not much.

This will end up being sharpened with a 4" XX. The gullets will be much smaller.

When I get back from the trip, I'll cut in and "sharpen" with each of the files I have and label the pic. That will be a better look at the gullet sizes.

Take care, Mike

Nice information Mike, especially the tip about doing early stages in major work with larger, longer files.

Sadly, APTC don't even sell double extra slim files... ! The search for UK sources continues.

Your gullets (so far) look comparable to what I got - don't forget that fleam enlarges gullet profile as viewed straight on, and I was using 15 degere fleam,

G&T's?
Can't even say that. More a mixing of positive and negative statements.

BB, I'll get around to taking a piece of waste steel, cutting in with each file size I have and then labeling each for a better comparitive. Maybe one of each, rip and crosscut, side by side.

btw, on really tiny teeth [greater than 20 ppi] I have been known to use 3 square needle files [Grobet] and rolling the file on the last two strokes to produce a tiny gullet as the file brings the tooth to the proper rake. Tricky, but on 22-26 ppi it works with the last two strokes.

But it should be mentioned that on such thin steel [.015] a rip tooth is all it gets. No set. File from both sides and the burr is enough for clearance.

Good luck on the file hunt. Alteratively, if all else fails, I can mail you some.

Take care, Mike

Darn. In an attempt to get smaller gullets for small teeth, I ordered one of these from APTC

(Swiss 3 square needle file)

http://www.axminster.co.uk/name/needle/ ... -22530.htm

It's a very nice file, fine teeth, and double cut.

But its arrises AKA gullet creating corners are bigger than the 4" and 5" extra slim Vallorbe saw sharpening files I already have.

It's a nice needle file though.
