Hi All

Currently making new box frame windows for my house and had a question about cutting the pockets. When cutting out of the pulley stile do you make the vertical cut up the middle of the parting bead groove or to one side. Cant work out if there is a correct way here or if it even matters. Seems to make sense to centre it but thought someone may have a view on this.

We had a thread about this a while back. Basically there is no hard and fast rule re position. Personally I'd put it to one side of the parting bead as that way, if you need to remove it then you don't have the extra work of removing the parting bead/replacing it when it splits/repainting it etc.

Just make sure the pocket is long enough to take whatever length weights you need.

Most of the ones I have worked on it has been cut down the centre of the groove.
The parting bead then holds it back in place.

However, I think there is probably a minor differance is the design of windows depending what joinery they came out of and even which joiner made them - I'm sure I've worked on a few that were made by the apprentice!

Mine are to one side (the inside of the parting bead). The outer weight is then reached through the same pocket as there is no baffle/divider where the pocket is.

Thanks Guys. Did them yesterday. Ended up doing them to one side for the simple reason that as these are new windows I am using plastic parting beads which sit in a plastic channel (improved draught protection) which may have caused problems (if ever need to get to the pockets) if I had cut them down the middle. Had 9 windows to do so took some time but have to say quite enjoyed it. Nice to have a go at time tested techniques from time to time. Never made box frames before so been an education.
