Sash repair

I have a Victorian sash window and the bottom rail has gone and also the right stile and one of the meeting rails.

They are made of softwood (pine). What specific type of softwood would you use to repair them considering pine is not of the same quality as years gone by?

I have been told 'Scandinavian redwood' Am I right in saying 'This is just a flashy name for Scot's pine'?

Hi Spud, I have the same type of sash windows. I repaired mine (exterior)with pressure treated spruce, then with clear cuprinol preserver, wood primer, under coat and finally gloss.

As for Scots Pine, can't say :wink:

See the thing is there are all these different terms. Take for instance 'spruce', well that's a pine, so is redwood. All the different Pine species have different names and everyone terms them differently.

But I know all the good sash window makers use 'Scandinavian Redwood'.

It would just be nice to know what exactly scandinavian redwood is.
