I'm thinking of turning a salt box, any suggestions for a good finish to use on it?

I personally would finish off with a Melamine enhanced lacquer, it's what I use for sugar pots etc. in the kitchen and seems to wear reasonably well, just a quick refresh every 2-3 yrs.

If you have never used Melamine enhanced lacquer before, I would suggest you use a spray can version.

Melamine is not the easiest stuff to apply as it skins rapidly and you can't go over any edges to blend it in after a few seconds if applying by cloth.
Needs practice on volume and speed of application.

With the spray versions you only have to observe the normal problems with spray cans of too little leaving a mist or too much causing runs.

Just enough to wet the surface, do not be tempted to touch either type until it has fully set as it skins quickly but can take several minutes (10-20) for it to evaporate enough to be handled.

And note that if you want to buff it, it's best to wait until the next day, it takes as much as a week to obtain its maximum cure strength.

If you use normal can version I suggest you thin it down 10% for first try's until you get a feel for it.
