Hello

I am new to this forum, so hi. My first post here is a problem I have with my router (an Elu MOF177E). Whenever I use it I find it extremely difficult to remove the bit and collet, so much so that I have had to tap it (gently) with a brass rod and hammer. This can't be right - can someone advise me on why the bit and collet keeps getting stuck and what I can do to prevent this?

Thanks

Richard

Undoing the collet is a two stage process. First turn the nut with the spanner so it comes loose, then undo it about two full turns and you will notice it becomes tight again, put the spanner back on and keep turning this will break the grip of the taper and free the collet.

Note this only works if the collet has been correctly snapped into the nut to start with, if its not held in teh nut by the small circular spring clip then the nut won't pull the collet out.

MOF177E is not a new machine, is it new to you ? Have you always had this problem, if not, what happened ? Maybe take off and clean it with tiny wire brush

No you're right it should come out easily!

Try to get your little finger up inside the spindle and check and see if you can feel any burrs on the inside also it wouldn't do any harm to try and rub the inside of the spincle with scotchbrite or very fine sand paper, rap it round a pencil or similar and rub the inside. Also check the collect itself and make sure it doesn't have any abraisions or burrs on it, although it shouldn't have as it is hardened steel. and lastly make sure you have no burrs on the cutter either.

Hope this helps

Bill

What you are probably doing wrong, as mentioned in the other reply's is the following:

You are currently putting the collet and bit into the router, then you are screwing the nut on to hold them in place.
You should snap the nut onto the collet before fitting them to the machine. The nut then pulls the collet out when you undo it with the spanner.
Easy mistake to make, I know beacuse I did it when I first started working with a router!!

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like the problem was that I was not snapping the collet into the nut - none of my routing books think to mention that! I will also check for burrs and give it a clean etc. so hopefully next time I use it all will be well.

Thanks again!

Richard

Richard I have the same router. If you can run to a muscle chuck from Woodrat is great.. it's a quarter turn with an allen key to take the cutters out. Highly recommended if you change cutters often. Geoff
