If you've only a couple of garlic cloves in it do you even need holes. I have a pottery version without holes and the garlic seems to last perfectly well. Mind you a couple of cloves won't remain in there more than a week!
Mind you many of the suggestions above look really good.

Just returned to this thread. That was not my work I showed, just a typical example. Glad to see you've been shown the method. There's plenty of scope for variation.
