Not having a planer / thicknesser, I've always bought PAR timber from the local timber merchants.

I'm on the lookout for a planer thicknesser in the near future, but having searched around for rough sawn timber, none of my local timber merchants seem to sell it. Where abouts do people buy it from?

Cheers

The closest timber yard to you that I regularly use and can recommend is English Woodlands,

Another option (and a bit more user friendly for smaller quantities) is Surrey Timbers.

You're doing the right thing by the way, if you're serious about hardwood furniture making, then selecting your own boards from a timber yard and machining them yourself is the best way to go.

Good luck!

Before I moved back to Wales I used W L West in Petworth, both for the good quality European Oak they stocked, but also for the fact that they would deliver at a fair price as far as Berkshire.

They supplied me with sawn stock as well as waney edged. I usually bought around 8 or 10 cubic feet at a time, not big quantities for those guys, but were always willing to supply what I wanted.

Never let me down and I hope that things haven't changed for the worse in the past 7 years............

All best

.............- looks like there's more around than I thought :)

I think that there is in your neck of the woods, Matt.

It's otherwise in wild Ceredigion.............. My local supplier has just retired and while this county is awash with trees, there are no supliers of decent furniture timber to speak of.

All best

For oak you could try Wealden oak in Marsh green near Edenbridge.

For exotics, there is timberline in Tonbridge http://www.exotichardwoods.co.uk/

For small amounts of tulipwood, oak, ash etc we usually have some in our timber rack and are happy to machine it up for beer tokens!
Very kind, thank you Robin!
