Hey guys, I'm new to these parts and am after a bit of advice.

I run a UK based custom drum company and am startin to produce my new shells soon all going well.

These drums will be ply shells built up from 0.6mm plys of maple and birch.

Does anybody know of anywhere in the UK where I can get rotary cut sheets of maple and birch. I need rotary cut because of the size of drums ill be making and ideally i need sheets atleast 2mx2m.

Any help would be great

Cheers
Phil

Welcome to the forum, Phil.

No idea I'm afraid, but I bet someone will be able to help. To be honest I thought it was near impossible to get anything but rotary cut veneers these days, in commercial quantity anyway. I won't bore you with the tale of my brother's visit to a Brazilian veneer-producing outfit, including seeing rotary cutting in action, 'cos it's not relevant. Suffice it to say it was an experience wasted on a bank manager by all accounts...

Cheers, Alf

Welcoming, but also unhelpful

Welcome.

All I can suggest is googling a few search terms like veneer, rotary cut veneer, bulk veneer etc.

You may have some joy contacting the "regular" veneer suppliers, but I'm sure you want to cut out the middleman and deal direct with an importer.

Try one of the big London veneer suppliers like Capital Crispin 020 8525 0300. They have rotary cut stuff but it is usually available in narrower sheets than you require so will need to be edge jointed.

Another alternative would be "Flexi veneer" these are pre joined strips(about 9") wide on a paper backing and supplied in 8x4 sheets, I get mine from Here they can get other timbers made up.

Phil If you give us some indication of your location in the UK It may help someone point you to nearest possible stockist.

Edit: for instance these are one of the best in Gloucestershire area. http://www.severnply.co.uk/products/bc.php
and as Adam says a Google for Rotary Cut Plywood turns up many sources (mainly marine)

Hey cheers for all the help. I've mailed a few companies including capital crispin. Its provin difficult gettin my hands on maple but birch doesnt seem to be as much of a problem.

I'm in the north east of england Teesside to be presice. It'd be nice to find a local one I just as i could go down and have a chat with the guy etc. Dunno if there will be one near here, is it much of a specialised field??

I'm glad to see theres at least one other woodworker based in the North East of England, I thought I was the only one!!

As for helping you out....you could try John Boddies who are based just out side York, they have a huge range of timbers and veneers. Theres a top pub in the village too.....not that I frequent there very often you understand!!

A little closer to home you could try Robert Duncan who are base in Gateshead.....and just across the road to them is James Latham......

I hope that was of some use......let us know how you get on!
