Anyone out there ever made a rocking horse. I have just started one based on the plans in Anthony Dew's book "Restoring Rocking Horses". I managed to get the timber very cheaply but the hardware/tack is about £174!! Looks like it's going to be an expensive present! Anyone know of a source of cheaper accessories?

yep i made one for my little girl about 4 years ago, i bought the plans plus all the leather stuff from rockler usa

Worked out pretty well

Hi Pete

I made two, a small one first as a test piece, wasn't sure if I could carve :) shopped around for stuff but went with Anthony Dew in the end.

I don't know if i will be posting my pictures after having seen those one.

Gosh those beautifull ones are really puting my ones to shame

Hi Woody

very, very nice work. If I'm not mistaken it looks like an Anthony Dew 'Little Red rocker' plus his medium size horse (on bows or swing irons?) The latter is the one I'm making albeit in natural mahogany, chestnut sort of thing. Thabks for sharing those with everyone, as I said nice work.

Pete

You'll have noticed by now the bottom picture showing the larger on swing irons. Some info on them. The little red rocker is lime body and the base is oak with the turned posts made from an old oak post.
The larger one is indeed the medium size. made of Tulipwood/american poplar with the base being selected quarter sawn english oak. On this one I used oilite bushes cut down to suit, baked in the oven to remove excess oil then pressed home into the swing rails. Never squeaks and minimal wear.

For those who think specialist tools planers etc are needed...I did both these with a black and decker circular saw, to cut to size, no mean feat with a 10 foot x 3"x12" board, and hand planed all wood to size with an old stanley with standard blade. Mind you my hands were numb for a week. It was what decided me to invest in a planer/thicknesser.

Thanks all for the kind remarks

Alan

Alan

thanks for the tips. I too used to have a very limited selection of tools. I built a welsh dresser from old oak fence posts with a handsaw. smoothing plane and a battery drill. This is why I've just taken delivery of a planer/thicknesser! Speak soon

Alll the best
