When I want to have the guide set to 90 degrees with the V-shaped gouge jig, the jig doesn't fit - it hits the paper and seems to be too long. Is the platform it sits on adjustable to stop this happening?

Thanks, Chris

Don't think it's designed to be used that way, Spindle gouges etc, will have the front bevel ground with the platform tilted at 25-30 degrees or so.

the guy's using the jig as a guide to get the gouge at 90 degrees to the paper. Mine won't do that so I had to use the bar that should fit into the slot on the front face of the adjustable platform, which was ok but probably shouldn't be necessary?
(I had to reshape the end to 90 degrees because I made such a hash of the cutting edge on my first efforts on the roughing gouge - maybe most people don't need to regrind to 90 degrees!)

You may have a few fractions of adjustment in the Platen fixing holes if you slacken them off and push the platen back as you re-tighten, I doubt you have any significant play in the two countersunk bolts fixing the platform but you can try.

I don't have any experience of the Bought accessories and their fit tolerances as I made all that I need myself.

have you tried it both ways round? I think mine is not quite symmetrical

On my ProEdge, when stationary, there is about 1mm of clearance between the guide and the abrasive. When running, the abrasive can be heard touching the guide but it in no way interferes with the smooth movement of the guide and should be self correcting in time. This only occurs when set to 90°.

That worked! Thanks Chas. There's still a very tiny bit of contact but really nothing to worry about, and it won't last. Though as you say Marcros - it is longer one side than the other and the longer side would be in full contact. But sorted well enough now - thanks all.

Don't rely on that method for perfect 90 deg. for such things as Wide Plane blades without checking, there is no guarantee the Platen and the Platform guide slot are aligned. (hence why they sell an adjustable 90deg. alignment platform.)

Turning tools have no need for that level of precision so not of any significance.

Ok, thanks. Out of interest, how far can the proedge take you in terms of plane sharpening, using the finest (3000) grit? Can you get to the point that you can go straight from the belt to strop and expect decent results?
