Has anyone had any experience with the RIDER block planes that Axminster have on their website and in their catalogue?

Yes :!:

Try a search of "Rider" in Hand Tools.

Cheers Vann.

Some mixed messages there, The one I`ve bought is certainly a better finish than the one shown in the photo`s and it looks almost identical to the Quangsheng. I haven`t used it yet as it is a gift for Xmas and my workshop is not ready yet, Incidentally when I ordered it off Axminsters website it wasn`t advertised as either a 60 1/2 or a 9 1/2 just a WIDE BODIED LOW ANGLE block plane but when it arrived it says 9 1/2 on the box, As I`m a novice to woodwork these numbers do not mean anything to me yet, Whats the difference? and is the one I got a good one?

Peter demonstrated one to me at Sittingbourne at one of their open days and it was pretty darn good!

I have seen the other review where the one shown looks very very ropey indeed...particularly the quality of the casting which was far superior!

Like all things Oriental...one factory may make the same planes but extend the finish to dealers who demand more quality and pay the extra to do so...(or the volumes!)

I found the same with milling equipment...some things are ground and hardened...some just ground...some...well...apparently ground but probably by the apprentice line!
