Restored this one years ago and took off three layers of paint with course sandpaper and very sore fingers without trying to damage the rush seating. It went back to the shop and sold almost instantly. Not sure I'd fancy making one but maybe. Used an interesting trick to replace a broken spindle - make a replacement, slice it in half with a long diagonal cut, put the pieces in and glue them back together.

Blimey Kevin, I wouldn't like to have to rub that back mate. Looks really good!

Another possibility to replace a spindle would be long hole at the top and slip the spindle into the long hole, position it in the bottom a drop it into place. Not very well described, but I hope you get the gist?
