I doubt if I'll ever use it (even if I really knew how to) but I couldn't bear to see it in a box of rusty junk ... £3 for this one plus a 'less nice' one.

I thought it cleaned up ok, it'll look nice on the shelf with my Grandad's Rabone boat level.

A lovely mortise and tenon gauge. Just set the pins to the width of the mortise chisel or width of mortise, adjust the fence to where you want the mortise and mark out both the mortise and tenon. Great tool. Great find, looks terrific

You need to look for a brass thumbscrew to replace that ugly steel one, then it really will be worth hanging on a wall.

That gauge looks positively happy now that its been rescued and restored.

Being a screw slide mortise gauge makes it a good user too, at least I find that they are nice to use. And for less than 3 quid, absolute bargain - a brand new one from Joseph Marples would set you back upwards of £30.

I honestly doubt that I'll ever use it, but I couldn't just leave it there all sad-lookin'

Nice tool. There should be a little brass disc that goes between the screw tip and the slide, to stop the screw making dents in the brass. These are quite easily lost when you take the stock right off the beam.

But I'm puzzled - has someone found a way to cut a mortice and tenon joint without one now?

Well, even if you never use it, you've rescued and preserved it for future woodworkers who might, so I'd say well worth doing, and it will look nice too even if not used.

Be aware that collecting and restoring old tools can be a very easily caught disease...

Yep, the little disc fell out when I dismantled it for cleaning... It was an 'educated guess' where it went, but it's all good.

Nick, there's something about the combo of old wood and old brass that will always attract people like me made from old skin and old bones :-D

lol
