Hi, I have just inherited an Axminster dust extractor. The one capacitor is blown but I need help identifying the right replacement. There seems to be a start capacitor (grey) and what I assume is a run capacitor (black). The run capacitor is the one that’s blown?

A capacitor like the one below from Amazon should work fine. The operating voltage can be higher than the 300VAC on the existing capacitor as long as the 30uF capacitance is the same.

The 40/70/21 on the capacitor below states the operating temperature of the capacitor is -40C to +70C, which is better at the low end and the same at the high end of your capacitor. It can withstand the temperature limits of operation for 21 days at 95-percent relative humidity before it fails.

£6.25 and upwards on ebay.
Search for "30uF motor run capacitor" and just make sure the working voltage is at least 300v as Mike says.
You're likely to find 400v or 450v rated parts on offer which is great.

The harder challenge may be to find one at the same or smaller physical size if it has to fit inside a box on the side of the motor. For that, you'll just have to do the leg work of asking sellers to measure them or do your shopping with a reputable vendor like RS Components (RSWWW) or Farnell who actually provide datasheets for their products so that you can look the dimensions up before ordering.

Hi, just to let you know it's all up and running. The advice on size was a good steer, I decided to replace the back box for a larger one to accommodate the new capacitor.

I got the new one from RF Potts in Derby. Thought if I needed any extra bits I could pop in. They were very helpful and I would recommend them.
