Hi folks I have a large soild walnut breakfast bar 2m by 1m which is made out of blocks glued together.

the blocks the worktop are made out of are about 50mm x 40mm x 200mm.

In the centre of the worktop a couple of the block appear to have contracted more that the rest of the worktop leaving a small split about 1mm wide the length of the one block about 200mm.

What's the best way to repair the split.

Should I

1) rip the whole work top down the length and try to replane, rejoint and re glue the worktop.

2) inject expoy into the split and let it set then sand down the glue and fill any of the split left with a hard wax.

Also there are a couple of surface shakes in a couple of the blocks what's the best way to deal with them.

Cheers Jon

I think I would go then epoxy route. You could add some earth pigment to match the colour.

One thing to think about is why it happened. Is it above the washing machine or dish washer? If so it may be because of heat/moisture from the appliance. May be worth sticking a damp proof membrane on the underside.

Do you have any similar timber? if you do route out to a depth of approx. 6mm the size of the individual block then cut a piece to fit and glue it in place, face it off to the original level and hopefully you will not be able to distinguish the repair

Glue and veneer or epoxy and ground instant coffee, I filled lots of pippy oak pips with epoxy and coffee.

Having recently done just that I was amazed just how good the araldite and coffee solution looks when finished! Might just be the best and easiest route unless you are a particular kind of sadist who likes removing/replacing worktops :D (one of my least favourite jobs).
