Spurred on by a recent thread I thought I really must give it a go and repair a chair that I broke a few years ago and has been waiting for the inspiration as to how to do it with out replacing the rush seating.
Just to make things a bit more difficult it is a side rail that broke and there is two strechers under it as well these are very sound so I wanted to leave well alone.
So the idea as Nick Gibbs suggested is to remove the broken rail clean out the joints and make a new rail with a scarf joint in its length then feed this in inbetween the rush glue the tenon ends and scarf aline it all up and cramp the scarf, easy then!
The old rail was broken right at one end so I cut though both ends as close to the legs as I could so that I could remove it.
This is the old rail minus its tenons on top of the new bit, I have allready made a splice in it with two small screws to hold it togther while shaping.
Which just left the job of getting it all back together
Well it was one heck of a fiddly job to do but it worked its strong and does the job, but I broke a few rushes in the struggle but glued these down at the end with a bit of hot melt glue.
Will I do it again? well may be but hope not!
