Too short planks

Hello,
I've just jointed some Redwood Pine planks to make a cabinet top; the problem I have is that after giving the top a light planing, I've ended up with tear-out in a number of spots (around knots mostly).
Has anyone used a filler which closely matches the colour of Pine and which is suitable for waxing or staining?
Is grain filler suitable in this instance?
Thanks for reading and I would be glad to hear from people who've overcome this problem in the past.
