Removing water marks

Hi guys

A nephew has a (large) office type desk that he's managed to get some water marks on.

It's made from MDF with a very thin layer of veneer laminated onto it.... the veneer only looks to be in the region of 0.5mm

I reckon sanding is out due to the 'thinness' of the veneer...

A quick google has come up with... white toothpaste, mayonnaise, and even peanut butter left over night... yum yum

Any other 'home-made' remedies i can try for him..?

Don't worry Water mark, water marks are very difficult to remove completely and often show up again when finished.

That's why there's a question mark in my query smartypants, cos it does relate to finishing on timber veneer,and I was just axing.

Removing Water Marks what :shock: :shock:

The last time I had to remove marks caused by someone putting a glass full of water on a veneered surface I was advised to use a fast disappearing possibility! *** ash mixed to a paste with linseed oil. A soft cloth wrapped around a finger and dipped into the paste. Apply this with a circular rubbing motion on the water mark and hey presto 8) 8)

The ash is a very fine a abrasive and if you can get somebody else's finger it takes all of the strain out of the job for you 8)

I have a chest of draws in our bedroom with the same problem and I have no idea where I put that little pot of *** ash I had. I got LOADS of wood ash though. I wonder if that would do the same job??
