Hi there, I've got a client who wants the bottom newel post, handrail and 8 lowest spindles to be removable. The two kites and low headroom prevent them getting anything large up the stairs. I've thought about cutting the newel down and using some fairly hefty dowels but once it's all glued back together it's no longer removable. Can't think of any way of doing it and making it look good, the client has some engineering background and keeps talking about nuts and bolts but it will look awful. Any suggestions appreciated,
Thanks, Nobby

Make the handrail removable - use Lamello Invis Mx2 fixings.

The spindles - leave 'em loose, just held in place by the spacers on the baserail & handrail.

The newel - ?? Could you dovetail it or use a massive bolt epoxied in the newel and tap a thread in the 'stump'?

Thanks Naz, I was thinking of using handrail zip bolts and a small blob of silicone to hold the top spacers in place. Bolt wise are you talking something like 12mm x 150mm with quite a coarse thread bonded into the newel ? Should do the trick as long as it's not over tightened ?
Many thanks,
Nobby

There's a kit available that has a large threaded rod in top part of newel and a star shaped nut that's inset into the top face of bottom part then you just twist the top part into place till tight. Be hard to work out orientation so that your handrail lines up but it's a strong joint that's designed for what you're after

Nev, thanks for that, I had no idea zip bolts did a bolt for that. I've ordered one and waiting for delivery, going to use a 35mm white plastic cover for the hole ( from a kitchen cupboard door) then it's easy to take apart again.
Thanks everyone for your ideas, Nobby
