Just bought this. Strictly speaking it's not a tool so doesn't fit on the 'new tool today' thread. It's superb. Plug in, switch on. Press the button once and it's programmed. I can now switch on my extraction from anywhere, prior I had to stretch up to a switch on the ceiling above the table saw. It comes with batteries for the remote. £7 with free delivery. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321627152520? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Great minds think alike - I had a brainwave the other day and realised one of those would be the best way to control my extractor! Nice to have a review of one, I'll get it ordered!

Yep I bought mine from Clas Ohlson and I have 2 different vacs plugged in. Can't fit my extractor without rewiring as it has no volt release switch.

Looks a good example of remote plugs, I have thought about one of those for a while, but then I have the problem of the NVR switch on the extractor. Somebody did try to explain how I could bypass that, but I have yet to get off my lazy behind and see if I can do it  .

Terry.

I don't know why you'd need a NVR on a Vac? i understand the need on things with sharp spinny blades etc. but are they worried you'll get sucked up if the power suddenly comes back on and you happen to be near it?

The one in the link is only rated at 290w so either your extractor is very low wattage or you are overloading the socket.
I used to use these a few years back, I tried several brands but non lasted long before packing up, though they were getting quite a lot of use, in the end I got a vac with its own power take off which has been far more satisfactory.

Can't disagree, but it has one so I need to deal with it. It is a 3hp chip extractor rather than my shop vac, so maybe that is the difference. As said by somebody else, given the power it would need to be a suitably rated remote socket.

Terry.

I use a similar but higher rating one on my Axminster chip extractor and also had to alter the NVR wiring, been working for over a year now. I also have another on a different chanel for my Earlex sprayer and find this very useful.

Yep not saying you were wrong, just saying that I don't know why a manufacturer would put one on. I wonder if it's due to H&S? Who knows, but as you say it's got one and you need a solution for it.

I expect they were concerned that if the power went out, someone thought it was broken and started taking it apart to fix it, then power comes back on while they've got their hand in the impeller, equals lawsuit.
Whilst very unlikely i expect this is the reason for the nvr on them

A bit more expensive than the one originally posted, but is on offer at £5.99 plus £2.99 delivery. It claims to be rated at 3120w which, whilst I am an electrics numb skull, sounds like enough to run my 3hp extractor. Thought I'd post in case anyone else needs a slightly more beefy one.

I have one of these running my 2HP dust extractor. They are good because they do not need line of sight between the remote and the plug. also in theory you could control several sockets with one remote and several plugs (not tried).
