This used to be something else I made that didn't really work well. It should have been bigger but now makes SWMBO happy :)

This I noticed cutting firewood, the odd short end from the logs. At first I thought it might be Cherry but now more inclined to think maybe a bit of black or white thorn. Dense, easy cutting the bark fell off when I ran up the lathe. Just fancied a play with something small.

Bark looked like a cross between cherry and blackthorn.

It can't be cherry hasn't split and has been cut for at least two days. When it dries will sand and polish it better.

Alder maybe? I've got a bootload at the moment I picked up from work. Bark looks similar to cherry, but is falling off in lumps. Heart wood is about the same shade as the last flowering cherry I limbed.

That is quite possible, There are a lot of streams and boggy bits around, and this was cut from beside the stream in our bottom field. I have seen Alder used here locally for furniture and you are right the grain/figure is very similar...

What's it like for splitting ?

No idea, but time will tell if the weather stays nasty. If the winds & rain are as bad tomorrow as forecast, I doubt I will get out to play, so the ends wont be getting painted until the first decent day.
