Quick question folks. How wide can the vice cheeks/linings be made when using a record quick release type vice? (9" width) I understand that there will be more chance of wracking (sp?) if its made too wide, whats a realistic sort of size?

Kind regards to the masses.

:)

Mine is 16 1/2" wide on a 9" 52 1/2 vice and is fine. No special method to choosing that size - I had a bit of oak that long and it looked about right.

Cut a few squares or rectangles of thinnish ply, 4 or 6mm thick or similar, and join them together with a bolt through one corner.

Use this at one end of the vice jaws, selecting a suitable number of the ply squares to approximate the thickness of the workpiece at the other end of the vice jaws, and racking will be prevented or at least minimised.

Think it was Alf's tip ages ago, might be a post somewhere with pictures if you search for it if the above isn't very clear which I suspect it probably isn't !

Cheers, Paul

Depends how tight you're going to close it.

Racking force is the product of force times cheek extension - both are factors.

Why do you feel the need for wide(r) jaws?

I've used wider jaw linings to help with dovetailing, so that a deep drawer side can be held vertically for sawing and transfer marking. I found it worked okay provided I put a matching piece of timber in the other side of the jaw linings to prevent racking and a "pinch" grip. To stop the other piece falling out I had a selection of scrap pieces in common thicknesses on a thin bolt, which I could hang over the vice opening. My jaw linings were about 16" wide on a Record 52 1/2.

Hello folks.

Sorry my scatter brain has been elsewhere.. Its more a case of 'just wondering' atm - I have purchased an old record QR with the intention of putting it on the end of my bench in progress. Was toying with the idea of making the jaws as wide as the bench is. Due to limited space my bench will be a mere 5' long, on the odd occasion for long work I thought I might be able to pull the bench out of position and fully extend the vice for a little extra support for work pieces.
