 Embarrassing question of the day

Its been lurking in the back of the cupboard for months or even years since someone gave it to me and today needed to gently plane something so thought I'd dig it out and see if it was any use.
Question: how the hell does it go together? I have a sneaking suspicion that the screw in the thingy next to the blade (part b) is in downside up but never having had a plane apart before thought I'd check ...

We'll call the parts a (frog?),b,c (blade :) ), and d going from the top of the pic down

Hello Nev,

That's a lovely "Stay Set" you have there. Rather than trying to explain visit http://www.rexmill.com/ go to "Tune UP" in the right hand menu, scroll to the bottom of the page. Each page has a very good detail on how a Bailey plane would go back together and refinements you might want to try should the mood take you.

You what!

You have a slightly unusual stay set back iron there, but next to the plane is the blade this is fixed to the back iron( the two pieces next to the blade fixed to the flat side. this sits bevel side down on the frog (already in the plane body) then the leaver cap (the top in your picture) holds it all in place.

Good luck!!!!

Cheers gents - sorted :) works a treat

It all goes together a lot easier when the screw in the back iron is inserted from the correct side
That'll teach me to assume that the previous owner had it assembled correctly.

Shavings achieved and sorted , good. Now that you have her working you should keep her out , quite addictive after a bit. Lovely bit of iron that. Look forward to seeing more of you on the Hand Tools Ward . Soon have you craving the perfect shaving mate.

looks like indeed it is pre war. going by a cursory glance at the lever, frog, thumbwheel, blade and stay set somewhere between 31-47. or to put it another way at least 20 years older than me :)

Interesting to see that in all the Record and Stanley catalogues and six hundred other sources, he's not found any record of a handle being called a "tote" :? . (Large wooden spoon - there should be a "smilie" for one of them! )

 Just stripped it and gave it a quick de-gunk and a light touch on the oil-stone so took a few pics just for you plane pervs .

Mmmmm nice.

Are the knob and tote rosewood? its difficult to tell.

Get that cap iron closer to the end of the blade!

I bought a 4 1/2 stayset with the blade in backwards I did manage to knock them down to £10 rosewood wood work as well!

Pete

It does look like Rosewood in the first pics, I have had Record planes with a Rosewood tote and a Beech knob and ones fully Rosewood.
The Rosewood ones look best striped of varnish and waxed, feels nicer as well.

I must say I am slightly jealous of your No7.

Pete

Looking at the lateral lever and plated frog screws - definitely pre-WW2 (1931-39). Therefore the tote (err..sorry rear handle) and knob should be rosewood. That tote looks too good to be that old so I'd say it's a replacement.

Cheers, Vann.
