A friend just completed the purchase of a house and asked if I would take away some big, heavy and ugly shelves from the lounge. As I am always looking for wood I happily agreed. There are 3 shelves, each 182cm long, 4.5 cm thick and the widest is 46 cm wide. Each shelf is actually made of 2 boards joined together and the are very heavy.

Can anybody identify the wood?

This photo is of the edge of a board where I have planed off the finish to reveal the natural wood colour.

Sapele seems a likely candidate, although identifying from photographs can be tricky. However, it's red/brown and has straight grain with a striped ribbon pattern, i.e., interlocked grain, all of which are pretty common features in sapele. Slainte.

+ 1 more for Sapele, I've hung a few of those sapele doors, made me come over all wobbly for a minute!
