Hello, I'm making an apprentice piece lowboy in cherry. I'd like some suggestions of a good wood for the cross banding on the edges for the top. What goes well with cherry and will add interest to the piece? The pieces will be shaped with a scratchstock - so I'm looking to avoid coarser grained wood that might suffer breakout in this process. Also, any suggestions of online shops to buy from (I'm assuming I'll need a board or turning blanks)? The top will be around 35cm x 25cm. Ideally I'm looking for European woods. Thanks.

Maple goes well with cherry, so something interesting like ripple maple or bird's eye maple.
For veneers, Crispin's has a good reputation.
