Hi all. In the next few days I will be making this for a mate of mine

Sorry its a bad pic, but my question is do I use butt joints or cut a rebait for the boxes, and what are the advantages of both if any. Thanks

Butt joints should be fine as long as you re-inforce them with biscuits or pocket hole them together. And glue the backs into a rebate for maximum strength.
Hope this helps

It's a slightly awkward design , the one in the pic, with the top overhanging the sides but the base fitting between the sides.
Personally I would have top and bottom fitting between the sides.

Dados are completely unnecessary, butt joints will be fine

Pocket screws and polyurethane glue would be just fine for this application. Alternatively you could use biscuits and pva.
