Our water is metered so it has to be used for the garden. I can put a piece of permanent plumbing in outside (the butt is directly outside) and in through the wall so that I can attach a hose and a small pump in the bathroom, but does anyone know of a non return valve suitable? The pipework (whichever way I do it) will be higher than the bath, so the water will run (not syphon) back. Any other ideas? Something obvious I've missed? (wouldn't be the first time :D )

Just a thought but unless you only have one bath a week aren't you going to need a really big water butt?

The grey water systems I've seen on TV looked to have pretty big reservoirs.

You have the feed pipe outlet higher than the high water level in the tank then it can't syphon back.

Yes, I did say run not syphon - it's only the contents of the actual pipe, I could do with not having the half pint or so of water on the floor everytime I pull the hose off.. I don't want to put the pipe six feet up the wall on the inside. it doesn't need much of a reservoir, really - at the time of year that it's necessary to use the bathwater, it'll be used in the garden daily. Cornwall has some of the Country's highest rainfall, but of course it only rains when I don't need water.

Good. Aquaria stuff I'd not thought of (despite having kept fish for years). That hose one might work. I've just had a logical thought. If I put the pipe over the bath, the water running back doesn't matter anyway.

Not bath water but my wife was listening to Garden Time on the radio the other day.
They were saying water from Butts can be nasty stuff - full of bad fungal spores which can damage plants!

If I divert the waste pipe, I've still to pump it up to the butt. I believe the the problem with the water was when it was stagnant. Mine doesn't last long enough for that. It might seem penny pinching to everyone in the Country that are not customers of South West Water, but we are careful with water and there are now only three of us and our water is £800++ p. a. without any garden watering, car washing or outdoor use.
As far as it goes, I'll put a 15mm pipe out through the wall and up tp the butt with a check valve (I suspect if I get one for a washing machine I will be able to put a hose tail on it) on the inside down by the side of the bath. A foot of hose one side and three feet on the other of a small battery pump, a battery drill and away I go.

I have syphoned bath water by filling the hose from the tap first then sticking in the bath.
I don't have enough suck to do it normally.

Yes. But syphons don't work uphill. The butt is 5' higher than the bath.

Ah! Now that is a problem.
Bath in the Butt and collect waste in the bath?
No obviously not.
Your pump solution seems to be about the best.

I once used one of these to empty an oil tank of 400l of kerosene. Probably not the safest way but it worked surprising well.
