I saw a youtube video of Carl Jacobson turning a baby rattle, and quite fancied a go. Hollowing the top part was a challenge with a round scraper and spindle gouge, especially in a home made chuck. It's not quite spherical where I turned the spigot off, but I know how to avoid that next time.

The rattle bit is oak, and the handle beech.

Now that really takes my fancy mate!! Nice job..

If you use the 'pinch' chuck idea that I used on my lazy susan to turn the ball then you could get it spherical with not too much bother.

Scaled up a bit of course  I have a multi head live tail stock bit, but if you don't then all you need to do is to make the tailstack end a nice interference fit on whatever you have and away you go. It woun't matter that there is a hole in it either.

I may even have a crack at that myself if you don't mind?

Edit : - Thinking about it it doesn't have to be spherical does it? You could make it whatever shape you fancy :D
