I would like to upgrade one the vices on my bench to a quick release vice.

Rutlands are selling their version at a reduced price currently https://www.rutlands.co.uk/hand-too...227mm-quick-release-vice---lifetime-guarantee ... is this a good option ?

or would one of the Axminister vices from this tread https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/for-sale-woodworker-s-clamps-t63701.html be a better option.

or something else ? (All the reasonably priced vices on ebay seem to be a long way away !).

My bench is a relatively modest one, bought from Axminster a while ago, similar to http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-beech-work-bench-prod558647/ -- would fitting one of these vices in place of one of the existing vices be difficult ?

Advice, opinions etc. gratefully received.

The typical (and common) Record Q/R vice is a 9", and I believe the import patterns are from that one.
They are very good indeed, but heavy and deep (by deep I mean from top of jaws to clamp face under, and length into bench underside... just big all over really).
I think you could easily fit one to the Axi bench you show, but would have to add hardwood packing blocks under the bench top to make the under-mounting face of the vice align to bench top.

I had a Rutlands pattern of the Record 52 1/2 a while ago, and I would say it is as good as the Record. BUT, wait and get a local 52 1/2 for about £25? (maybe less).

btw - Something I was planning to look into - did Record ever make a Q/R 7" vice?? I'd like one of those, as the classic 9" is way too heavy and big for most of what you need it for (IMHO)

The Record #52 is 7" and was available as plain screw or quick release and with or without a dog.

Cheers

Thank you Paul and Lee... I now need a 52 with QR and dog. It's a good job we all know what we are talking about, outsiders might be baffled :?
