I am not sure if Lidl deals are nationwide - I get the impression they have what they found on the back of a lorry that day!

I bought a cheapo one and regretted it straight away - it was like a soldering iron really, and even with a range of nibs it was pretty rubbish for pyro. Let us know how you get on with yours.

If it is a 'soldering iron' type then it can be a reasonable intro to pyrography and if you do decide that you like it then you can go on to a better machine. Solid tip machines take time to heat and more important, to cool. Limited, but OK for a starter and for £9 you can't really go wrong as long as you don't let it put you off

Also my bible for pyrography is "The Complete Pyrography" by Stephen Poole. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Pyrogr ... 083&sr=8-1

Very well worth it!

The problem I found was, as a beginner, I wanted to hold it like I would a pen ie near the nib, and you can't as it is obviously hot! Is that a function of the design of cheap pyro kits, or am I misunderstanding how to do it?

If you scroll down a little this is the pen I have. It is used with a Janik transformer, very similar to the PC one

Very easy to use, doesn't get hot even after long use, temp adjustment is virtually instant. Even though you just have the wire it is more virsatile than the solid piont type and is the type used by pros. I ain't a pro!!

I'vem seen your work - including your fantastic dog platter last month and I think you are being too modest!

I agree with you though. I have the Peter Child unit you linked to and find it quite easy to use. I have never tried the soldering iron type one so can't offer a comparison.
