hello. i have one of these huge but lovely lathes and lots of stuff with it. To change the speed of this one you need to pop the hood and move the belts. others of the same model seem to be able to control the speed by a wheel which i assume is some sort of vairable load. Has anyone fitted one and know where i can get one to fit to my lathe?

Thank you.

Sorry to dampen your enthusiasm but the Reeves drive mechanism and it's associated (Large Size) six pole low speed motor is a different ball game to a straight pulley driven model and not a practical option even if you could find it.

If you want to go variable speed the only thing likely to be practical is to fit a 3ph. motor and suitable invertor. (as fitted to the much latter and slightly less bulky construction version)

This thread has images of the Reeves Drive version.

Here's some images of the slightly smaller casting electronic speed control version as I acquired it, (since slightly modified for reverse running etc.)
