Hi,

I've just made a new top for a workmate to raise the height by several inches, extend the working surface and also to house a couple of removable tool trays. The workmate will be stored and used on a south facing balcony year round. It will always be kept covered with a tarpaulin when rain is likely.
I've made the top out of MRMDF. I appreciate this isn't the best choice for something that's going to be outdoors, but it's all I had available.

I was wondering what finish would be best to try and keep the workmate top well protected? Would an oil finish of some description be best or what about something like an exterior varnish or yacht varnish.
I have a new tin of Sikkens Cetol HLS (exterior satin basecoat and woodstain) sitting in the shed. Would that be a better option?
I'm not bothered about colour/appearance but just want the best chance of protection.
The outer surfaces could be maintained periodically but the inside surfaces won't be accessible once the 'structure' is assembled and glued up.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated and a big help. Thanks.
