My mouse has decided to scroll the page rapidly, seemingly of its own accord - it seems all I have to do is breath on thing. I've been through settings, but I can't find any reason and I haven't deliberately altered anything. The wheel seems way over sensitive as well. It's driving me nuts. Any ideas? :D

try using your hand instead of your nuts. :)

restart.

then consider it maybe a hardware issue with dodgy scroll wheel (they do give up eventually)

Have you got a gaming mouse?
The scroll wheel on a gamer has sideways sensitive switches, one of which will go top to bottom and back.
If the pointer is changing to another sign, press sideways on the wheel, or click the left button to disconnect it.

Tried that. I'm wondering if it's faulty - my computer is on for 16 hours a day so it does some work. I seem to remember having problems with a couple of mice before.

It's not a gaming mouse, but it has the sideways wheel and side buttons.

Borrow another mouse of any variety

If it solves the problem you know its the original mouse, it it doesn't resolve it you know its the computer

Mice die after a few years of use

#-o ](*,) Funny how the obvious escapes us sometimes. The new mouse that came with the computer was two feet from me. On a quick trial it would seem to be it. I'll have to get yet another mouse as I'm used to using the side buttons and struggle without them.

Firstly, which mouse is it?
Is it a Logitech with a scroll clutch, perhaps?
Does it have multiple profiles, whereby you may have accidentally switched to one with a much higher DPI or scroll setting?

An HP mouse. I may well have inadvertently set it to something different, but I can't find it.
I'm on a hiding to nothing - I know sod all about computers and like them even less. :D

You're not pressing down on the scroll wheel, are you?
Many nowadays have a click-switch on the wheel, which toggles the Auto-Scroll mode on/off.

so this.

good to know.

Is it a wired mouse?

Try it in a different usb slot. If it is plugged into the back change it to one at the front or vice versa

Sometimes usb slots short out and create behaviour like this.

No, I know that one.
Perhaps check your mouse settings, see if you've nudged the sensitivity up. Some have shortcuts mapped to certain buttons (or combinations) that let you alter the DPI 'on-the-fly', so to speak. I have mine mapped thus on the scroll wheel tilt, but also have different profiles with different sensitivities set up.

If its an older type with a ball underneath, remove the ball and scrape off all the crud on the three rollers. I used to have to do that fairly often. Its amazing what collects on them.
The new infra red types dont have that problem

only pets here are the geckos in the garden, and theyre the short haired variety.

In the olden days the ball ones where affected by bright sunlight.
