I use a kreg, need to get a clamp for it but not sure what to get, the price of the ones I've seen are ridiculous.

Kreg jr3 perfectly good enough but you do need the clamp I would say at about £16 on ebay.

I did my research and whilst there are plenty of people happy with the Rutlands and UJK Technology units, there are a lot of reported issues as well, whereas I couldn't find a single complaint with the Kreg range.

I erred towards the metal construction of the other units thinking the plastic of the Kreg was not as substantial but to be honest its a well made product

I use a Kreg but have been using Axi's screws. They have torx heads but seem to work ok. Just remember who's screws you are using if you need to take them apart ! Also make sure you have a spare drill bit. I had two for ages and then suddenly one broke ( at a very important time ) Geoff

Kreg k4. I don't use any of the posh expensive clamps I just improve with regular ones. I use the keg pan heads but only cos I got a job lot honks ago when they run out ill get the cheapest. The Kreg jig is very well made. Simple and effective.

Would i get away with the Kreg R3 Pocket Hole Jig instead of the Kreg 4 just for home DIY use?

Obviously down to price.

Pocket hole screw fixing is very easily done without a gadget:
You need a longish drill bit bit for clearance. You freehand drill a hole at the desired angle, as near as you can judge - easier if you start it at 90º and then turn it to the desired angle once it's located. Enlarge it with a counter sink and bang in a screw.
Who needs a gadget!
