I think I've got a leak in the coil of my hot water tank.

So this afternoon I've disconnected the coil from the heating system, capped it and pressure tested it.

In 3 hours the gauge has dropped from 40 psi to 34 psi and is still dropping.

Am I right to think it's knackered?

When you say disconnected it - I assume you've disconnected both ends of they as the enter\exit the tank, etc.?

In which a pressure loss would mean knackered tank to me.

yes disconnected both iends and capped.......................

update

since the initial pressure drop it hasn't continued?????????...

so i'm going to see what happens overnight

You could always un-cap both ends & put a tub/bucket under the bottom tapping of the coil, if it fills with water you have a leaky coil.
They usually go with a pin hole forming in the coil & the give away signs are that the central heating header tank starts over flowing as the bigger domestic hot water header tank is usually higher & the water is trying to find its own level.

Edit, depending on how you`ve capped the ends you could be getting a pressure drop as some plumbing fittings aren`t air tight

Also your coil is full of air surrounded by a water jacket and the water temperature could be falling during your test?

pressure is proportional to absolute temperature (kelvin)
