Been hard at it all week making things other people wanted so finished the day playing. This is a goblet head from one that snapped at sometime (I keep a box of bits like that) with a walnut stem turned seperately, 3mm dia.The whole thing is 595mm tall. Not sure if you class it as a natural edge goblet or a trembleur LOL. Totally useless but good therapy after a week of commissions.

Great piece of turning. I think we all need a piece of therapy now and again, sometimes it is when the best work is produced.
Keep having therapy

Hi Pete

500mm x 3mm =D>

Do you turn the stem in stages, feeding through the head and tail stocks, or is it a one off between centres?

Regards Mick

I turn thin spindles in the same way that the Trembleur guys do it Mick, free turned with a string steady, you can't have it between centres as the flex becomes too great long before you get that thin.

By Free turned I mean the piece is held in a chuck with no support at the tail stock end till it needs it (as you work back) then a string steady is used. Pretty sure Pete will have used something very similar.

Hi Kim

That's my new knowledge for today :) - had to look up string steadies, very interesting, something new to try, (especially as I don't have a hollow headstock).

Regards Mick

I agree the video was incredible. I just hope none of the entrants for next months "Delicate" challenge come close to those.
As regards the "therapy" I think its just as stunning but for me it would have caused more stress than ever worrying about it snapping.

I would imagine if you were on the last bit of turning and it snapped, the air would be mighty blue

I have seen the trembleur video Pete, it's fantastic. I have actually made a skateboard wheel steady too, it works fine, plus during my search for wheels that were a reasonable price (inline skate wheels rather than skateboard) I never noticed till I had made the steady and tested it that they have internal lights, so now I get a multicoloured light show when I am using it! :).

Love it Pete A lot of guts to turn that more like a trembler ............thanks for showing
Regards
Bill
