Trying to identify the wood to match this plaque, Sycamore? Maple?

Both Sycamore and Maple are from the same related group, so they're often tricky to tell apart. Sycamore tends to be a bit whiter (if it's dried properly) and tends to be a bit softer. I'll come at this from the other end of the problem and say the maker of these plaques would have been more likely to choose Sycamore rather than Maple...but they'd have been even more likely to have chosen Lime!

I had originally thought Lime just because of the carving aspect but tended to discount because of the pronounced ring boundaries and strong flecking, But I've never worked with much Lime.

I think Acer is a bit more likely than Tilia - the latewood is more pronounced and the earlywood has more texture. I think it's a Scottish family crest (Acer and Tilia grow happily in Scotland so that doesn't help really does it!). Cheers, W2S

PS The smell of Tilia is distinctive
