Planning permission musings

Reading a copy of the local planning items being raised I was a bit surprised to see one for 'alteration of planning permission from garage to home workshop'.

Oops, I thought. I then started wondering just how many of us are 'guilty'?

What defines a home workshop anyway? No car maintenance? No storage of paints and brushes?

Use just as a home workshop should not require planning consent, but if you sell any of your work (as I guess most of us do) then the situation could be different! Issues such as liability for business rates could also complicate life.

Not definitive, but a search on Google threw up a number of pages including http://www.planning-applications.co.uk/change of use.htm

That's a useful site and so it seems that as long as I stick to doing it as a hobby then no permission change needed.
