A while ago I posted a wish list for hand tools, specifically planes and most of the responses came back as either the LN or Cilfton.

Luckily I was able to try out both LN and Clifton planes when I visited visited Philly yesterday. As one for always taking advise apart from the block plane I went for the Clifton, the block being LN.

These are the ones I ordered:

Clifton Jack, still 10% off from Axminster.
Clifton 4 1/2 Smoother
Clifton # 7 Jointer

LN 9 1/2 low angle block 10% off

Veritas Spoke shave

Already ordered and can't wait for them to arrive this week.

Thanks for the advice Philly, I think I saved about £300 with the Clifton choice. Although that went on the two LN saws and all the little bits to sharpen.

HID's was impressed that I'd actually saved money on tools, but hasn't quite clicked that the overall price is still the same.

 Ooh! The underhand things us woodies will do to improve our workshops

Thanks Waka - that buying tip has been duly noted for future use....

Waka,

Ooo, nice. Philly obviously needs to start looking into getting commission from Clifton. Just one thing strikes me; the 9 1/2 is a standard angle block plane. You don't have a low angle on the list at all. :( 'Course, you could always add one in...

Good point you had me worried for a moment, I had to go back and check I'd ordered the right one, it should have red LN 60 1/2 Low Angle Block.

Be far it was early in the morning.

Phew. <Dashes imaginary perspiration from virtual brow> I thought for a minute there you might have to buy another plane...

Hey Waka,
Big day tomorrow! (hopefully  )
Lets hope your order is at the front of the delivery van, not the back!
cheers,

Philly

Already spoken to them today to ensure that it will be here tomorrow, the lovely Penny at the other end said I should have it during the morning. I'm so excited I'm sipping the gin, well big gulps really, not sure if I'll be able to sleep tonight.

Got the float glass today, 15" x 10" x 6mm, as promised I got a piece for you, all you have to do is collect it.

Here's me sounding like an expert which I'm not. I got this info from Philly and it was substantiated by the glassier who I got the glass from.

Float glass, because of the way its made is probably the flatest surface you can get, therefore ideal for those sharpening jobs.

If you go into a previous thread Philly shows how he sharpens his blades, I also had a demonstration on an old record planes I found hidden away in my workshop, and it really works to the point that it took the hairs off the back of my hand.

Any decent glassier should stock the glass and it comes in various thicknesses, obviously the thicker the glass the better. Just to give you an idea of cost I bought two pieces of the size mentioned above and it was only £9. Good value I thought.

Hope this helps

Just been on the phone with a certain "new tool owner". Chuffed to bits but one big dilema. Where do you put these beauties?
So please post links to plans for "fine tool temples" . :D
Well done that man!
Cheers
Philly :D

Hmm. Lessee... A few ideas:

http://andy.sargent.net/wood/shop/default.htm for some good ideas from Andy Sargent.
In fact it's probably worth checking out all the galoot sites: http://www.geocities.com/plybench/galoots.html
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=4048 for Dave Anderson's fine plane and saw tills.

It's a start anyway. :D

Cheers, Alf

Who'd offer to take on the problem personally, if it wasn't for her own storage crisis...

Alf,
Great links and super stuff. I think I like Ted Owen's the best overall but Dave Anderson's is nice too. I keep telling myself that my shop is too small to have anything like a cabinet stick a foot out from the wall but I am actually not completely certain if this is just an excuse for delay. Also I think just maybe I might be into a new bench before a tool cabinet. and If I can gel the ideas that are presently rather liquid, I might solve some of my storage problems with the bench.

Thanks Philly

Trying to convince HID's that a built in cupboard in the bedroom might be a good idea, moe gin required I think.

If not a bed in the WS is looking likely, ah the pleasure of tools (no dirty mionds now)

Hmm. In the second auction, how does coming across a Stanley #9 (mavellous drive-by there by the seller) mean you don't need a L-N #102 any more? :? I'm confused.

Cheers, Alf
