Greetings all. I’m looking for a benchtop thicknesser and wondered what the pros and cons are of the bench top thicknesser as opposed to the benchtop planer thicknesser apart from the obvious! I want one mainly for thicknessing as most planing I do is with a hand plane. ( old school I know but I prefer it). Was looking at the DeWalt one, 733 is it? Any advice appreciated. Andy.

Most benchtop planer thicknessers are quite small and will have a dodgy build. The dewalt will thickness 12inch wide accurately. And is built to last.

Thanks for that. Sorry, didn’t see your reply I never got an alert. So would you not bother with the planer thicknesser type? I don’t think I would use the planer function much but wondered if it was useful for getting square edges on timber before thicknessing?

+1
If you know your way around WW machines, you probably could cajole such PTs into working, but it will take some time, experience and so on. Similar in a way to the inexpensive hand planes.
Best bet would be to buy a small, used, cast iron machine. The heavier the better.

Ah ok. Are you saying it’s better to have planers and thicknessers as two separate dedicated machines? A thicknesser and a jointer as it were?

That's what a planer is for, the sequence is flatten one face, that face against the fence to produce a right angle face with the planer, then go to the thicknesser to square it all up, sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs, but you did say I wondered if........

That is an advantage if you have the room and the convenience of not having to change one over for the other.

Yeah I don’t really know why I wondered about the right angle bit! Senior moment! I mainly meant does the fact that it’s basically a 2in 1 machine mean the thicknesser part is likely to be pants compared to a standalone thicknesser like the dewalt one.
