Meant to post this a while ago, this non-Stanley iron was in the no. 4 I restored recently:

The MADE IN ENGLAND and SHEFFIELD CAST STEEL are easy enough to figure out from what remains but I'm at a loss about what the brand was.

_ _ _NER? _ _ _ _ I E R?

I've posted photographic tips in other threads, which might help.

But my guess would be RAPIER.

This is not identical to yours, but it's very very similar.

Damn you bugbear! I know nothing of vintage planes, but I love a challenge to sue the internet to find an answer, and I had just come to the same answer. Strongest evidence is from http://lumberjocks.com/topics/62108, pic 1/3 way down page, shows iron with Rapier inside an elongated oval. You can just make out the remnants of the oval on the OP original pic around the R.

Thank you gents! I should have thought of Rapier darn it, but initially I was convinced it was the remains of an M which led me down the wrong track. I only later considered it was more likely to be an N or possibly an H and only just thought it might be an I.
