I think a small pin vice is an essential tool for the wood or metal workshop. It's so easy to just chuck a small drill bit or countersink bit and work by hand. This small pin vice has a 4mm chuck (~£4 from ebay), I then made the handle with a mild steel centre and a JT0 (or close to) taper on the end to accept the chuck - I used a small amount loctite as this is a taper that doesn't need to come apart. The wooden handle was machined as a fit over the steel handle, bonded with epoxy and then finally turned and finished as one piece. For the chuck key I just cut it short and bonded it into the threaded cap. This does mean that the hole in the handle needs to be big enough to take the diameter of the key.
