Turned this today - its approx. 70mm diameter 130mm tall. Don't know what wood it is - found on side of road ages ago - can anyone tell me what it is please? I'm having trouble hollowing it out, I can only get about 50mm in before any tool I try starts juddering. I guess I haven't got the proper tools! Or is it a difficult wood to work? I've finished it in beeswax for now.

It may help to know what tool you are using to hollow it out, to see if it is the wrong tool or your technique. The outside looks good not sure of the wood

Difficult to tell from the grain it you are trying to turn into end grain. I looks like its got a few knots and Burl so the grain is running in multiple directions. I am no expert but the way i would tackle it is to drill/bore the centre out to the depth you require then use bowl gouge or hollowing tool if you have one and using a scraping cut start from centre and work towards the perimeter.

I am sure if this is wrong there will be plenty on here who will advise you of the recognized method.

Juddering is usually either because you are hanging over the rest too far or because you are cutting above the centre. Ideally you need to have a tool that is big enough to go deeper and keep the cut at the centre or below. I have done this sort of thing with a 1/2" spindle gouge but as said it is easier with a bowl gouge or hollowing tool. Both tend to be that bit less flexible in the shaft so are not so likely to judder.
