Just to show that pen blanks don't have to be square, just as long as they finish up round :mrgreen:

on the other hand I haven't found a square tree yet #-o, or put another way pen blanks are what you make them (unless you buy them :idea: )

square'ish do chuck a little easier/more securely though
 
looks even more suited to a square blank than my chuck!

my lathe beats my drill press hands down for drilling (1mt drill bits direct in the tailstock mainly) as well :(
 
Hi All

I daren’t show you a picture of blanks that I use. Often they are half a small branch sawn in half along the grain. I then ‘trim’ the flat section so that it has 3 sides and an automatic curve following the rest of the branch. Some timber, especially box, I just take a small branch and drill down the centre as there is no appreciable pith and the wood is so dense anyway.
