The green and wetter end of the M4.
Voila! one drozda-esque thingy.
well sort of anyway. Had a go at shaping a small Y section of branch into a mini vase shape today, no finishing involved just a bit of practice, and it came out ok :)
Sit the remnants of my finial lid disaster inside and knock up a quick finial from a bit of scrap and TaDaa! one Drozda.

I dont think she'll be having any sleepless nights but it certainly gives me some ideas for the future. :D

I was half expecting to see a "turned gateaux" here.
Don't knock it Nev, if I'd done that I would be nothing short of ecstatic! Lovely bit of work. It would have ended up as expensive hamster bedding with me I reckon, I've still got a lot of learning and practicing to do yet
Not saying I'd want it on my mantlepiece though! :p

Nev , turn the final into a ring holder or something ,but let the Vase stand on its own ,this is my opinion . the turning looks real good so is the finish but separate please.

What Boysie said is what I was thinking, the two pieces would work better separately I think. Looking back at my OP it sounds a bit snotty  but it wasn't intended to be. I wasn't even drunk last night!

No snottiness noticed Bodge :)

It was just a bit of an experiment in non round stock and leftovers.
My new blue grinding wheel must be doing its job, or Eugene needs to go to specsavers  , this was straight from the bowl gouge, no sanding involved. The wood cut beautifully smoothly and smelled like horlicks - possibly a bit of hazel?
I guess I must be in the minority as a fan of finials and related ornaments , I can hardly see a difference between mine and Cindys

Heh heh. I think finials are a bit like Marmite really, you either love 'em or hate 'em.
While I can appreciate the time, effort and skill that goes into making them and they are undoubtedly beautiful in their own right, I personally am not a huge fan, but then as has been pointed out on other threads recently, everyone has their own ideas and it would be a dull old world if we all liked the same thing.
Keep knocking them out Nev, I for one enjoy seeing whatever people are making whether I like the aesthetics or not. As a novice turner it all helps me appreciate what is achievable and helps me learn. 8)
