So... 100cmx50cm panel in a frame-and-panel setting. And my friend has accidentally found himself without the nice 10" wide, 40" long ash boards he was going to use for making up the panel, but has found himself in possession of twice as many 10" wide, 20" long boards =D> Apart from advice on what kind of wall best suits his forehead and what size boots are best for kicking himself with, can anyone think of a clever solution or is "go buy more ash" just the only real route here?

Asking for a friend, obviously.... #-o

And by "clever", I'm wondering things like "would it really be so bad if the grain ran across the 50cm direction instead of along the 100cm direction..."

Are they exactly 20" long or do you have enough excess you might consider scarf joints?

The only reason why not is that movement is greater across the grain so you'd have to think hard about shrinkage/expansion along the length instead of across the width.

The cost of replacement is far less than all the times in the future you, er I mean your friend, will be rankled by the error.

And the 20" pieces are big enough to be used for another project.

Get some blue marking crayons and write on the boards, it makes it much easier for setting out a cut plan
