Painting Ply

Hi folks
I'm painting some ply kitchen units before assembly. As the external sides won't be seen where the units butt up to each other, can I get away with painting one coat on the unseen surface to stabalise the ply or should I paint both surfaces with the same number of coats ?  Hope that maker sense

Hi John,

There won't be any need to apply the same number of coats to the unseen surfaces. Ply is quite stable in any event and you won't need to balance the surfaces as you would do if veneering, for example. As a matter of good practice it is a good idea to prime the hidden faces or seal with PVA diluted with water. This will help prevent any swelling and movement from water (although this shouldn't really be an issue for the project you are doing).
