hi i have started making wood house signs once i have cut out the letters i then hand paint the letters but find sometimes the paint bleeds into the edges of the wood giving a poor look if i give the wood a quick spray of varnish when i come to paint the letters will the paint stick to the varnish anyone got any ideas or perhaps tell me of another way?

Whats the wood and whats the paint?

Are you priming, undercoating and top coating?

J

I use oak and yew the paint is an exterior dulux gloss i don't undercoat as it takes ages to paint in all the letters had no trouble during the summer but the last one i did bled into the wood could be that perhaps i was too generous with the paint who knows

Try brushing in Cellulose sanding sealer into the letter recess, making sure you wet the engrain in the sides, dries in a few minutes and should help.

Chas is spot on. I had a similar problem with some stain on an ash table top. Coated the Ash with cellulose sanding sealer and it cured the problem.

When I used to make these I would give them a clear coat of varnish first then paint in the letters then sand the surface back and then varnish them again.

Doing it this way also means that any brush slips when you are doing the letters are sanded off.

Just make sure the varnish and paint will work together.

I 'think' the pros spray with varnish(Lacquer) first and then spray over with black (or what ever colour) then sand off the overspray then apply more varnish.
I had trouble on my first few attempts so I might give that a try.

I take the easy option and get a mate to do my engraving and painting for me. :)

Once you have the right paint and the right tools, it isn't difficult to do and should require no varnish or sanding afterwards. It just requires patience and a steady hand, something that I don't have.
I'm afraid that beyond that, I can't give the game away as that is how he earns his living.
