hi all,
wondering if you could advise me about this :-

It was in a cold wet workshop for a while, is it permanent or can I fix it?

I had similar. I just rubbed it all down with wet and dry paper, primed with a primer sold for use on metals and painted it.

Then again, if your time is money, it's probably cheaper to buy a new one - they're not expensive.

It looks like white rust on a galvanised vent. It should just clean off with wet and dry or wire wool (most of it will brush off and so less to clog paper or wool. Use a zinc compatible primer if overpainting.

Rub a bit of fine scotchbrite over it.
Out of interest, is it galvanised or aluminium?

If its Galvanised you could just put a bit of cold galv spray over it once clean.

Aluminium oxidises easily if left exposed, rub it down and seal it with a laquer
