New decking project is going to require much cutting of posts etc and I always like to put something on the ends in the vague hope of preventing the uptake of moisture.

I know I'm sort of chasing the rainbow but as I can't do what my Dad used to do (old engine oil and paraffin!) what's the best option these days? Do I need a new fangled sealer or will a simple coat/soak in my ronseal preservative do the job?

If you are talking about the decking boards I would not seal them but use the preservative, giving them a long soak. Slows down the installation but ensures that they do not rot before everything else. I did this to my deck which is now mainly removed and although some of the boards are a bit tatty in top the ends are fine.
